Abstract: Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems are designed to reduce maintenance costs and increase the aircraft's service life. Such SHM systems should operate consistently and show a predictable performance under different service conditions. The capability of a sensor-based SHM system in detecting structural flaws depends on the sensor signals and actuator performance. However, service conditions can change the behavior of transducers, raising questions about long-term SHM system capability. While SHM technologies continue to advance, uncertainties in their affordability, capability and maintainability prevent their widespread implementation in aerospace structures. A greater understanding of how the aircraft environment will affect a given SHM system is needed to pave the path for their full utilization. The main objective of this presentation is to review the durability of PZT transducers, bonded or embedded to composite laminates and subjected to various loading conditions.
